» tell me a little more about the game.
La Fête Finale ( the Final Party in butchered French! ) is based loosely off of Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque of the Red Death. For those of you that haven't read it yet, fix this posthaste because it is brilliant and terrible in all the ways Poe's works generally are. The story is about Prince Prospero hosting a party for his friends and fellow nobles to escape a disease called the Red Death, when a mysterious figure in the costume of a corpse shows up; by the next morning, everyone is dead. It is likely an allegory for the Black Plague and its devastation across Europe, or tuberculosis having destroyed his wife and her family.

In La Fête, it's a little more literal, and our unexpected guest will be a familiar face hidden behind a mask. Their devastation is aimed across dimensions, and it's up to you to stop them.

Every playable character in game is an invited guest; no one arrives against their will. They are treated as honoured guests, given lavish accommodations, and catered to at every turn. They are free to mingle and explore amongst themselves as they please, and the grand event will be as extravagant as one might expect of a celebration for all in the whole of existence. The cordiality doesn't end when the murders begin either; the house staff will still be pleasant and obliging as they bury your friends' bodies.

It will be up to the PCs to solve the mystery and find the murderer. The mods will leave clues in a variety of means that the players will have to collect and piece together in order to find a lead. The monthly masquerades will hold different themes and new surprises, but there will still be other minor events sprinkled throughout the course of the month. Outside of that, it's up to the guests to survive on their own. Supplies are limited and prospects are dire; what you have is what you get, and you have a lot of murder with no answers. We only throw the very best of parties.

» where exactly is the murder house? and when?
Prospero's Manor itself stays true to the time and location of The Masque in that it is very old-fashioned European from the architecture to the house staff. The common language is French, though everything written will be translated into a non-specific language via the universal translation. We have a few pictures on the locations page for reference, but we'll leave specifics and details up to you for sake of artistic liberty.

The realm itself, however, exists outside of time and is on its own plane of existence. If it's to be a convergence of all places and timelines, it has to remain perfectly positioned above the rivers of both. Which is to say that it's incredibly vague and non-specific because RP, we do what we want!

» what should we expect from the pacing / timeline of the game?
The days are reckoned in real time; that is, one OOC day is the equivalent to one IC day, so OOC dates will correspond directly in game. We have a schedule page set up here to show the game calendar and the placement of events. There will be no calendars available in game, however, so your character might want to start counting if they plan on staying up to date ( get it? up to date? with the dates? oh, we're so clever ).

As far as the timeline goes, we're tentatively aiming for a year-run. This depends on player reception and activity, however; if we don't get enough response, we'll be halving the timeline to six months. It's basically like a round of Cluedo. We'll kill people and leave hints, but if no one picks up the clues and starts finishing the puzzle, we'll cut the game shorter by upping the ante and killing everyone instead. Huzzah!

( That's a joke, if you haven't caught on to our terrible humour. We'll be more overt in our clues so you have a better chance of solving it faster. Or we'll just kill everyone. We're not picky. )

» so how do we actually do the gameplay thing?
La Fête is a community-based game with the majority of our gameplay taking place in logs on the main community. There is no network function and most interaction will take place in-person at various locations throughout the manor. The mods will post logs for any major events, but you are free to post your own logs at any time using the form on the template post here. You must tag every log you participate in with your character's tag, which will be given to you in the Western format of » givenname surname. If you don't tag your posts, we'll feed you to the hounds. And we don't even have hounds. Yeah. You think about that one.

The other portion of gameplay will take place in written notes. There will be bulletin boards open to all characters for use, but this is not a replacement for a network system! It's exactly like leaving a post-it note for your roommate when you're going out for groceries; you can leave notices, post advertisements, hang up some noodle art, etc etc, but all of it will be done on your own time and left there until someone happens to wander past it and take a gander. Responses are not immediate unless you're standing next to someone and pinning up paper back and forth without actually speaking to each other, in which case, you guys need help. That's worse than texting someone sitting next to you, dweebs.

We also request that you post an IC inbox of sorts in your character journal. This will serve as a "mail slot" in a manner; notes can be slipped under your bedroom door, so you must make room available to do so. We may be sending out metaplot and minor events by these notes, so make sure you have a post set up!

» okay, but how does all that nonsense count towards AC?
Being that this is a log-based game that is heavily dependent on player activity, we ask for one of the following:
  1. ten comments in one log on the main community;
  2. fifteen comments of written notes;
  3. a combo of five comments in one log and ten comments in written notes;
All comments posted within the AC month count towards your overall activity. This means that if you have ten comments from July in a log that was started in June, those ten comments are still valid for AC. To counterbalance allowing backtags to be valid, however, we will also be asking that you do not use the same log twice for AC. We reserve the right to request alternative activity proofs if we feel it's necessary.

Additionally, we will be holding a game-wide mandatory HMD on the 18th/19 of each month which will end when AC opens. You must accompany your AC tally with a link to your HMD comment.

Activity checks will be held on the 25/26th of each month and will be open for one week, ending on the 2nd of the next month. We strongly advise that you track the !activity check tag in the OOC community so that you don't miss out!

» how can players get in on the plot without being mods?
We have a handy dandy sign-up page right over here! We'll already have the part of the killer cast, but we'd love for you and your friends to sign up to be otherwise directly involved. What's a murder mystery without any corpses or investigators? Just fill out the provided form and let us know how you'd like to be involved: discovering an important piece of evidence, a fingerprint left in your character's blood, playing tag with the murderer; whatever way you'd like to involve your character. Let us know; we'll be happy to work with you.

On the flip side, we also welcome and encourage player plots of any sort! We have a suggestions page set up over here, where you can submit any PC run events or the coordination of any clubs / organisations / villain support groups / etc as you please. For any of you bad guys out there looking to start some trouble, please see PC murders to make sure you follow all the red tape. We know, murder has never been so corporate, but we gotta make sure everyone is playing by the rules before you can stop playing by the rules!

» all right. obviously you guys want to kill us, so what happens when our characters die?
People die when they are killed. It's an unfortunate fact of life. There are several ways in which your character can and will be murdered! ( We say, ever so gleefully. ) The first, biggest, and automatic way is the compulsory death roll. Every month, we will roll for varying numbers of characters to die, and if your character's is one of the ones we draw, then that character is slated to die. When this happens, we will contact you privately through your preferred contact method at least two or three days prior to the event. We ask that when that happens ( and it will ), you keep mum about it; we'd like to surprise the rest of the playerbase as to who is dying and when. No suddenly giving all of your stuff away, no going on one last date – death should be as much of a surprise to your character as it will be to their loved ones.

Once it happens, you will not be able to start any new activity with them, though you are more than welcome to finish out any old threads. If both of your characters' numbers are drawn, then you will unfortunately be out of the game. Fear not, though: if you've got two characters and one of them dies, your second character will be exempt from the death roll for the following month. We're not that heartless. Please understand that there is no negotiating this. When you join this game, you automatically sign up your character to die; it's all a matter of how and when.

We are, however, more than happy to work out how you'd like your character to die with you! If you have no preference as to how your character perishes, that's fine, but it's so much more fun when everyone is satisfied at the end, isn't it? With that in mind, if you'd like for your character's corpse to carry any clues or metaplot, please do let us know at the metaplot request page. We are most accommodating murderers; so long as you're not asking for your character to do a portrait of the murderer in their own blood with their dying breath, all should be well.

Another way characters can die is through player plots. You are more than welcome to plot with your friends to kill each other! Hell, we encourage it. All we ask is that, if you do decide to reenact Julius Caesar, please make sure that all players involved have given their consent and understand the consequences. Death is not taken lightly, despite all evidence to the contrary: once a character dies, that's it for them. You or your fellow players must be sure that they are willing to lose that character, as there are no take-backs. Once everyone is certain that they want to proceed, please have all involved parties drop a comment to the death request page. The mods will review your circumstances and get back to you shortly.

» what if I want to canon update my character?
Unfortunately, with the way the game is set up, canon updating will be impossible. Once the gates close behind your characters, they close for good; to canon update would mean that one way or another, your character is leaving the grounds, and our good hosts just can't have that. When you pick a canon point, you're stuck with it, so make sure it's something you're comfortable with. We suggest a lull in the character's canon, so that they're not itching to get home and solve some mysteries. If new information comes to light about your character ( for example, Irene Adler from Elementary ) that you feel may affect the way you're playing the character, please contact the mods and we'll work with you to figure out how best to proceed.

» what about hiatusing?
Everyone needs to take a breather every now and again, and we completely understand that! You can call a hiatus at any time during the game by posting it on the official hiatus page. Hiatuses longer than one month require mod approval beforehand; please contact us if you have any extenuating circumstances that may need a longer hiatus or that may keep you from being able to post an official hiatus. We will not enter your character for mandatory death rolls while you're on an official hiatus.

As far as AC goes, we will waive AC requirements for the month if you have posted an official hiatus that lasts two weeks or longer during the AC month. That means a hiatus from May 14 to May 28 will exempt you from May's AC, but a hiatus from May 28 to June 11 will not. Only hiatuses posted on the official hiatus page will qualify for an exemption, and you will still be required to check in to AC! All you'll have to do is fill out the exemption form to let us know that you're still around and plan on coming back. If your hiatus is during the AC period, you will have 72 hours after your hiatus ends to check in before we sweep you from the game.

» what if I need to drop?
Then we are very sorry to see you go. Once you're absolutely positive that you need to drop, just respond to the hiatus/drops page with the required information. For the first three months after the game's opening, drops will go unpunished; the character will simply vanish, as though they were never there at all. Another player is free to apply for them, so long as they take them from even a slightly different canon point. For example, if Player A picked up Booker Dewitt from the boss battle with Songbird and then dropped him, Player B could take him from after the battle, or even while he was on his way to it. As long as the canon points differ by even a few minutes and applications are still open, the character is repickable.

However, after the first three months have passed, applications will close for good and your character is no longer safe. Death is a looming threat at all times in La Fête; if you decide that you need to drop for whatever reason, then your character will be added to the list of the dead. It's up to you how they kick the bucket, whether it be part of a player plot or a contribution to the overall game plot, but once you post that drop comment, they're doomed. We absolutely won't blame you if you do need to drop out, but please do think long and hard about it before finally pushing that button!
